Abstract
As the population ages and the number of people with chronic disease increases, so does the health expenditure. The importance of primary medical institutions has emerged for the continuous management of chronic diseases, and the concept of ¡°Usual source of care¡± is also mentioned. Usual source of care (USC) is the doctor¡¯s office, clinic, health center, or other place where a person would usually go if sick or in need of advice about his or her health. In terms of the continuity of care, this study aims to analyze personal health expenditure depending on USC possession and period in the elderlies. The analysis used a nationally representative sample of Koreans 65 years old or older who participated in the Korea health panel survey in 2012, 2013, 2016, 2017. This study finds that outpatient expense of USC group was higher than no-USC group, and the longer the elderlies¡¯s USC retention period, the higher the outpatient expense increased. But inpatient expenses decrease with longer USC retention periods. Compared to overseas, the concept of USC in Korea is different. It requires considering the characteristics of Korea¡¯s health care system. It is expected that the development of customized policies will be necessary considering the demographic and pathological characteristics and usage behavior of the elderlies.
